I’ve Been Very Disappointed!

Here is one of my personal experiences: Last year I rented what I thought would be a beautiful, luxurious condo. The pictures looked perfect and the owner said I would love it based on my needs. When I arrived I discovered the condo had been up for sale and had not been cleaned for several months. Even though I clearly specified that cleanliness was very important to me, there was half an inch of dust under all the furniture, the walls were scuffed with markings everywhere, the carpets were worn down and dirty, and to top it off, there was a millipede problem! I woke every morning to millipedes crawling around inside the condo! Harmless little critters but I did not want them in my living space. I ended up spending an additional $500 for cleaning services, lost sleep due to the millipede invasion and never really felt comfortable in my surroundings the entire trip!

Another disappointing experience for me!

This is the condition of the bath and shower of a rental I arrived to on one vacation! Even though this property was located in an upscale neighborhood, it sure didn’t make a difference where cleanliness is concerned!

I can assure you this dirt and mildew did not show up in any of the photos I was shown prior to booking this cottage.

Honeymooners Find Cockroaches!!

Although I had some unfortunate experiences, it was when I read a posting online about a young couple’s disastrous honeymoon that I was convinced this service was absolutely necessary!

The disheartened newlyweds wrote that they arrived to find dirty premises and cockroaches! What upset me is that I was actually familiar with the property. I knew this property looked beautiful in the images the owner provided but ‘in person’ it was less than appealing.

This honeymooning couple was forced to look for other accommodations and had to pay twice! Not exactly the dream start to their marriage they had hoped for!

YOU WANT TO AVOID THIS: A phenomenon known as SNAD:

As documented in a November 2008 article in the Wall Street Journal regarding vacation rentals: ‘… efforts are being made to combat the phenomenon known as SNAD, or ‘significantly not as described’. That’s when the home that looks like paradise on the Web site turns out to be noisy, dated and uncomfortable’.

We all need some vacation rental Local Eyes™ to check out the place before we get there!

To arrive at less-than-acceptable accommodations for a vacation or special event like a honeymoon is very upsetting. While searching for places online, many times I thought, "It would be great if I knew someone on the Island to check the place out before I make a down payment---I need a local aide to see the place and report their findings!" I know that most owners/managers are doing their best to help but I always feel they don’t really ‘hear me’ and understand what is most important to me.

I also know they are trying to make a sale. It was obvious I needed someone professional, honest, and knowledgeable with an objective perspective to help me decide on the right place so I could just show up and start my vacation - happy and relaxed! “After a night’s sleep staying in a hotel in Hawaii we were HORRIFIED to find that we’d caught CRABS from their infected bed!!! Yuck, yuck, yuck!!! Needless to say, we checked out, had to spend significant holiday time seeking treatment, laundering all of our clothes and being angry about our scummy experience. “

“the place looked like a palace online and even had a picture of the two Canadian owners. When we got there we were shocked - it was a run-down slum!! The 'Canadians' were not in the country and we had to spend a whole day trying to find another place to stay that was affordable......”

“The worst thing: an uncomfortable bed – if you don’t get a good sleep, you don’t enjoy your vacation. I also don’t enjoy it when there are things like “construction next door” starting at 7 AM that wasn’t mentioned.”

“Location relative to everything can also be a bummer if you don't know a place and you are misled.”

“... looked great on the website, but was far from great when we arrived there. I complained to the manager and even pulled out my laptop to show him the hotel I was expecting, but he simply shrugged his shoulders and said ...."well, you're here". Stayed there anyways since it was the US Thanksgiving holiday and all hotels in the area were already booked solid”
